Thunder Unable to Complete Sweep

Akron, OH - The Thunder were unable to overcome a poor outing by Kei Igawa as Akron avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-4 win over Trenton on Sunday afternoon. Trenton (15-15) picked up three-hit performances from Corban Joseph and Melky Mesa in the loss. The team returns home on Monday to take on the Reading Phillies.

Trenton pulled to within a run in the ninth inning on a double from Mesa and base hit from Joseph. Ray Kruml then bounced a ball to second to drive in Mesa. With the potential tying run at second, Austin Krum grounded out sharply to first to end the game.

Akron jumped on Igawa in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded catcher Chun Chen drilled a double to center that nearly left the park. Matt Mcbride drove in the third run for Akron with a groundout to second base. The Aeros added two more in the second on hits from Kyle Bellows, Jordan Henry and Tim Fedroff.

The Thunder cut the lead to 5-2 with a two-run triple from Corban Joseph in the top of the fourth inning and added one more in the fifth. Ray Kruml bunted his way on to start the fifth and then stole second and third base. Austin Romine drove in Kruml with a base hit to right to cut the Akron lead to 5-3.

Igawa worked four innings and allowed five runs on ten hits in his first ever start with Trenton. Naoya Okamoto entered in the fifth tossed two scorless innings in his first appearances since being placed on the disabled list in late April.

Austin Adams battled through six innings and yielded three runs (two earned) on six hits. Adams struck out two and walked two before being relieved by Chen-Chang Lee. The Thunder threatened in the sixth inning after a walk to Joseph and a base hit form Melky Mesa but a strike out-throw out double play ended the scoring opportunity and
