Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Altoona Curve (14-14) avoided a series sweep, claiming the finale of a three-game series, 7-2, over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (14-16) in front of 5,399 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon.
Curve starter Jared Hughes walked Juan Perez leading off the Richmond second inning, and the Squirrels took advantage for the first lead of the game. Perez swiped second base and advanced to third on a ground out from Roger Kieschnick. A batter later, Johnny Monell brought him home for a 1-0 lead with a single laced to left field.
The Curve responded in the fourth against Squirrels' starter Justin Fitzgerald. Brock Holt sparked Altoona with a lead-off single. Starling Marte singled behind him to move him to third, and he scored to tie the game on a sacrifice fly from Quincy Latimore.
Altoona jumped in front in the fifth when Eric Fryer laid down a bunt-single to start the inning. Miles Durham doubled behind him, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Following an intentional-walk, Hughes grounded into a double-play. Fryer scored on the play, putting the Curve ahead, 2-1.
A big inning in the sixth put Altoona in control for good. Marte blooped a single to center field to start the frame, and Latimore drove him home with a double. Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI double, extending the Curve lead to 4-1. Two batters later, Durham made it 5-1 with his second double of the ballgame. Fitzgerald departed in favor of left-hander David Quinowski, and Brad Chalk capped the inning with a fourth RBI double in the inning.
Fitzgerald (2-2) took the loss over 5 2/3 innings, conceding six earned runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three as he suffered his second consecutive defeat.
Hughes (1-1) conceded one more run to the Squirrels in the seventh inning, his final frame of the day. He earned his first victory of the season in his longest outing of the year. He allowed just two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out two.
The Curve tacked on one more run against Richmond reliever Edwin Quirarte in the eighth inning. Right-hander Michael Dubee worked the final two innings on the mound to preserve the win for Altoona.
The Squirrels will travel to Bowie, MD, to open a three-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) on Monday night at Prince George's Stadium. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 7:05 PM. RHP Daryl Maday (0-2, 3.80) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Mitch Atkins (1-0, 4.61) for the Baysox.
