Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Three Bowie Baysox hurlers combined to shutout the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 2-0, in the series-opener of a three-game series in front of 6,198 at The Diamond on Tuesday night.
The Baysox got after Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner hurriedly in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Greg Miclat singled into right-center field. Caleb Joseph followed with a double to right-center field and the Baysox had runners at second and third with one out. A batter later, Robbie Widlansky worked a full-count against Tanner before rapping a two-run single to left-center field to give Bowie an early 2-0 lead.
Bowie starter Alfredo Simon (1-0) coasted through his six innings, shutting out the Squirrels on three hits. Making his third Major League rehabilitation start, the right-hander walked a pair, but struck out four as he earned his first victory for the Baysox.
Tanner (0-4) settled in and conceded just three singles over his final five innings. He turned in his second consecutive quality start, but lost for the fourth time on the year. Ultimately, he permitted two earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out six as the Squirrels fell to 0-7 in his seven starts.
The Squirrels also couldn't get to the Bowie bullpen, as Right-handers Dan Klein and Jose Diaz took it the rest of the way for the Baysox. Klein worked two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. Diaz worked a scoreless ninth inning to tie for the league-lead with his 12th save.
In the loss, the Squirrels' bullpen was once again solid, working three scoreless innings. Left-hander Alex Hinshaw, making his Squirrels' debut, worked a scoreless frame in the seventh. Right-hander Ronnie Ray handled the eighth, and lefty David Quinowski kept it a two-run game in the ninth.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. LHP Ryan Verdugo (1-0, 3.03) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Zach Clark (4-1, 3.05) for the Baysox.
