(ALTOONA, PA)- The Bowie Baysox smacked three home runs and counted 14 hits Monday in an 11-5 rout of the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark.
Val Majewski, Lance Burkhart, and Woody Cliffords launched round-trippers and five batters had two or more hits for Bowie (5-6). Altoona (5-6) lost for the sixth time in seven games, falling below .500 for the first time in 2004.
Right-hander John Maine (2-0) allowed four runs on six hits, but worked six innings to get the win. The Orioles' number-two prospect walked one and struck out three.
Ian Snell (1-2) suffered his second straight defeat for the Curve. The right-hander gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in four innings.
Bowie jumped out to a 3-0, first-inning lead on a two-run homer by Majewski and an RBI single by Ed Rogers.
The Curve battled back to tie it with an RBI double by Gary Thomas in the first inning and a two-run blast by Ronny Paulino in the second. The home run was Paulino's second in as many days. The catcher leads Altoona with nine RBI.
Bowie reclaimed the advantage with a pair of runs in the fourth. Altoona pulled to within 5-4 in the bottom of the same inning when Jeff Keppinger doubled and scored on a single by Ray Navarrete.
The Baysox broke the game open with a five-run fifth against reliever Brady Borner. Rogers and Cliffords collected run-producing singles before Burkhart capped the rally with a three-run shot to left.
Cliffords made it 11-4 in the seventh with a solo blast.
Keppinger and Navarrete led the Curve's nine-hit attack with two safeties apiece.
Game two of the series at Blair County Ballpark is Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Altoona lefty Mike Connolly (1-1, 9.00) will square off with Bowie right-hander Denny Bautista (1-1, 6.75).
