Portland, ME)- Kenny Perez delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off Jeff Kennard to lift the Portland Sea Dogs to an 8-7 win over the Thunder on Monday afternoon. The loss dropped the Thunder back to .500 (4-4).
Portland (4-6) got two walks from Kennard (0-1) in the 9th Inning with one out. After a single by C Jeff bailey loaded the bases, Perez followed with a hit over the drawn in outfield for the game winner. Kennard allowed one run and four hits in 1 2/3 innings. The win went to Portland's Juan Perez (1-0), who worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Trenton grabbed the early lead thanks to a two-run homer by by 3B Andy Phillips in his first game with the Thunder. The Sea Dogs responded with five runs in the second inning off Trenton starter Rik Currier that knocked him out of the game. That rally included a three-run homer by CF Eric Johnson.
The Thunder got a two-run homer from Jason Grove, his second in three games, to cut the deficit to 5-4. They added three more runs off Portland reliever Ryan Larson, including RBI hits from Robinson Cano and Aaron Rifkin for a 7-6 lead. Portland tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a run off Thunder reliever Charlie Isaacson.
The two teams meet again on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM. Chien-ming Wang (0-1, 3.86) starts for the Thunder against Portland's Charlie Zink (0-1, 2.70).
