MOBILE, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers (29-20) mustered an initial comeback against the Mobile BayBears (26-22), but late-inning runs allowed Mobile to grab a 11-3 victory on Saturday night.
The BayBears jumped on LHP Kodi Medeiros (L, 4-2) in the bottom of the first inning for a pair of runs. Luis Rengifo tripled, then Zach Houchins singled him in and scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Michael Barash. Mobile added another tally in the fourth when Houchins walked with the bases loaded.
RHP Griffin Canning made his first start since contributing to the BayBears no-hitter on May 14. The righty did not allow a hit over 3.2 frames, extending his hitless streak to a full nine innings.
The Shuckers rallied in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Wendell Rijo blasted a two-run home run to left, his fourth of the year. Two batters later, Troy Stokes Jr. deposited his sixth tater out to left to tie the game at three against reliever RHP Alex Klonowski (W, 1-0). Klonowski finished out the game in his relief effort, tossing 5.1 innings out of the pen, striking out seven.
Mobile answered right back against Medeiros who was chased from the game in the fifth. With the bases loaded, LHP Nick Ramirez allowed a single to Brandon Sanger. Rengifo then brought in Jared Walsh with an RBI-groundout, and Mobile claimed a lead they would not relinquish.
Ramirez stayed on the bump into the bottom of the seventh. After the first two batters reached, a brief rain delay halted play. When the BayBears came back out, they strung together a stretch of five hits over seven batters. The runs came in bunches against Ramirez and LHP Brad Kuntz, as Mobile struck for six, sending twelve men to the plate.
The Shuckers look to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM CT with RHP Trey Supak (0-0, 0.00) making his Double-A debut. He opposes the righty Jesus Castillo (4-3, 4.30) for Mobile.
