Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears (52-33) topped the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (37-49) with a 6-2 win Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. RHP Eric Brooks (1-0) earned the win on the mound, allowing just two hits over shutout innings while the BayBears bats backed Brooks with six runs on seven hits. The win is Mobile's fourth in six games against Pensacola this season. They BayBears have now won seven of their last 10 games.
Three runs came across in the first inning for the BayBears when Tom Belza scored from third on a bases-loaded RBI single from Dustin Martin. With the bases still loaded and just one out Gerson Montilla drew a walk pushing across Mobile's second run and the BayBears took a 3-0 lead on a ground out by Evan Marzilli.
Belza extended the BayBears lead to 5-0 with a two-run double in the second inning and Mobile's final run game in the sixth inning when Steve Rodriguez reached on an error and then later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Lamb to give Mobile a 6-0 advantage.
Travis Mattair broke up the shutout and put Pensacola on the bored for their only two runs of the game with a two-run homer off of BayBears RHP Kyle Winkler in the top half of the seventh inning.
The win was credited to Brooks who struck out five batters in his five innings of work while RHP Jimmie Sherfy and RHP R.J. Hively each threw an inning of shutout ball. Despite the homer allowed by Winkler, the righty struck out five batters in two innings of work and both runs were unearned after a fielding error accrued before the home run.
RHP Daniel Corcino (7-7) was credited with the loss, his second against the BayBears this season. Corcino allowed all six runs although only four were earned. The righty surrendered seven hits, walking four batters and striking out four men over 5.1 innings on the mound for the Blue Wahoos.
Mobile and Pensacola continue their five game series with game two Saturday scheduled for 6:05 PM. They BayBears will send RHP Bradin Hagens (6-3, 4.11) to the mound while RHP Jon Moscot (4-7, 3.08) will take the hill for the Blue Wahoos.
