Bautista solo homer stands up as only run in 1-0 Curve win

July 8, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

Jose Bautista belted a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning that held up as the winning run and Eddie Candelario and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Altoona Curve defeated the Harrisburg Senators, 1-0, Friday night before 6,155 fans at Blair County Ballpark.

In a brisk game that was played in 2 hours, 7 minutes--the Curve's shortest nine-inning contest of the season--Candelario and Harrisburg starter Josh Karp each worked seven strong innings, but Karp (1-1) surrendered the longball to Bautista in the first inning to suffer a tough-luck loss.

Meanwhile, Candelario (2-0) turned in his second consecutive strong performance, scattering just four hits in his seven innings on the mound to earn the win. The right-hander, who struck out nine batters in picking up the victory in his previous start last Sunday at New Hampshire, did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Brady Borner worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning before turning the game over to Justin Kaye, who tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his franchise record-tying 21st save. Kaye tied the previous club record set by Todd Ozias during the 2003 season.

Despite getting three hits in the first inning, the Curve finished the game with just four hits and won for just the seventh time this season when being outhit by their opponent. Josh Bonifay posted a hit to increase his team-high hitting streak to eight games.

Altoona (45-40) will remain 1 1/2 games behind first-place Erie entering Saturday's action after the SeaWolves defeated Akron, 1-0, Friday night in Akron.

The Curve and Senators will play the second game of their four-game series Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark. Altoona right-hander Matt Peterson (6-5, 6.55) will square off against Senators' lefty Rich Rundles (5-5, 3.51) in the 7:05 PM matchup.
