Randy Ruiz named Eastern League player of the month

Portland, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Reading Phillies first baseman Randy Ruiz has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of June. The 6'3", 230 lb. slugger had an outstanding month for the R-Phils, hitting .373 (41-for-110) with 13 doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI, 18 runs scored, a .434 on-base percentage and a .627 slugging percentage in 28 games. The 27-year old had 14 multiple hit games in June, including four three-hit games and one four-hit game. Ruiz, who led the Single-A Lakewood BlueClaws in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage last season, also had eight multiple RBI games and one multiple home run game during the month. If Ruiz stays at his current pace, he could become the first player since Danny Thomas of the 1976 Berkshire Brewers to win the Eastern League Triple Crown. Ruiz currently leads the league batting (.363) and RBI (72) and is also tied for the league lead in home runs, with 21. Randy also leads the league in slugging percentage (.680) and extra-base hits (47) and is ranked among the league leaders in doubles (26-2nd), on-base percentage (.411-2nd) and hits (102-4th). Due to his outstanding offensive performance so far this season, Ruiz was selected for the Southern Division roster for the 2005 Eastern League All-Star Game, which will be played at in Portland, Maine on July 13th. The Bronx, New York native was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a Minor League Free Agent on May 10th, 2004. Randy was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a Non-Drafted Free Agent on July 11th, 1999, out of Bellevue University.
