DuBose Regains Dominance as Baysox Shut Out Rock Cats
July 8, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Eric DuBose recaptured his early season form on Friday night, tossing eight scoreless innings while striking out ten Rock Cats to lead the Baysox to a 4-0 victory in front of 3,502 at Prince George's Stadium.
DuBose (6-9) picked up his first win since June 1 and had the longest outing of any Bowie pitcher this season. He gave up just four hits - all singles - and walked one batter. That base on balls was issued to Denard Span to lead off the game, but DuBose quickly recovered and retired the next 13 batters in order.
The only real threat DuBose faced on the night came in the eighth, when he gave up consecutive singles with one out. But Ben Pattee popped out and DuBose struck out Span to end the inning.
Tonight's outing was a far cry from DuBose's recent performances. He had been 0-5 in his last six starts with a 7.36 ERA.
The Baysox (43-43) supported DuBose with a pair of two-run innings, beginning with the bottom of the second. With one out, Woody Cliffords walked then stole second. He came around to score on a bloop double to left by Joey Hammond. Hammond stayed put on a groundout, but came home when Mike Huggins grounded a single to right.
Bowie took advantage of a pair of New Britain errors in the fourth and came up with two more runs. Omar Rogers started the inning by lofting a single just over the outstretched glove of Pattee at second base. After a flyout, Brandon Marsters hit what might have been a double play ball to short. But Tommy Watkins bobbled the ball and both runners reached safely. Peter Bergeron brought in one run with a single off the mound, and Marsters came home when Pattee misplayed a Brandon Fahey grounder.
The offense exacted a bit of revenge on New Britain starter Jim Abbott, who had handcuffed the Baysox just five days earlier. Abbott (3-2) held Bowie to just one unearned run on two hits on Sunday, but gave up seven hits tonight.
BAYSOX NOTES: RHP Jason Grimsley pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game, giving up one hit and striking out two. In seven appearances with the Baysox, Grimsley is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA...DuBose's ten strikeouts were the most he has collected since fanning ten Richmond Braves on May 14, 2003 as a member of the Ottawa Lynx...LHP Erik Bedard is slated to make his second rehab start for the Baysox on Monday.
ON DECK: The Baysox will look to make it three in a row on Saturday as they continue their series with the Rock Cats. LHP Kurt Birkins (4-6, 4.61) will face RHP Matt Yeatman (3-6, 4.48), with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow will also be Beach Night at Prince George's Stadium, with the first 1,000 fans receiving a Baysox Beach Cooler compliments of Modell's and Comcast SportsNet.
