Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Coming From Behind

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats went up 3-0 in the top of the first, but the Binghamton Mets scored the game's next nine runs, picking up a 9-5 victory at NYSEG Stadium last night. Starter Bryan Edwards allowed three runs over six innings for the win, Aarom Baldiris went 4 for 5 and Wayne Lydon had three hits and scored three runs for the B-Mets, who split their four-game series with New Hampshire and have won two of three.

Fit To Be Tied

The split of Binghamton's just-concluded series with New Hampshire continues a season-long pattern. Binghamton's played four series with New Hampshire - three at NYSEG Stadium and one at Fisher Cats Ballpark. All of those series have lasted four games and all of them were split by the two teams. The B-Mets still have a four-game and a three-game series left with the Fisher Cats, as the teams are scheduled to meet 23 times this season, the most games Binghamton will play against any opponent.

It's How You Start

Last night, Edwards gave the B-Mets their ninth consecutive start of at least five innings, with the starting staff posting a 3.50 ERA (21 ER, 54 IP) during that stretch. However, the starters are just 3-1 during those nine games. On three occasions, a starter left with the lead, only to have it lost by the bullpen. Brian Bannister was the last B-Mets starter to throw fewer than five, lasting 4 1/3 innings in a loss to New Britain at NYSEG Stadium on June 28th.

Jake At The Plate

Yesterday, Mike Jacobs hit his 18th homer of the year, one better than his homer total from his 2003 B-Mets season when he was named the Mets Minor League Player of the Year. No B-Met has hit 20 homers in a season since Rob Stratton (29) and Earl Snyder (20) in 2001.

On The Mound

RHP Brian Bannister (9-3, 2.23)

Last Time Out: Sun. @ AKR (L): 7 IP, 2 R, 5 H, BB, 7 K (L 2-0)...The only extra-base hit Brian gave up on the day was a two-run homer to Jon Van Every in the seventh, which wound up being the difference. Bannister allowed just three runners past second base, going seven innings for the fifth time in his last six starts. However, Brian still lost his second straight start.

This Season: Binghamton's Opening Night starter and an Eastern League All-Star, Brian's lasted less than five innings in just two of his 17 starts this year, giving up two runs or fewer 13 times and walking no more than two in 15 of his outings. The righthander has been better in nine road starts (7-2, 1.23) than he has been in eight home outings (2-1, 3.50). Brian bears down with men on base, allowing just six hits in 54 at-bats with runners in scoring position (.111) and picking a runner off at first in six of his last seven outings.

Against Norwich: Today, Brian will make his fourth start against Norwich and third in a row against Merkin Valdez. Brian threw his first career complete game June 17th at Norwich, shutting out the Navigators on four hits and no walks, striking out 10, while facing the minimum 27 in a 1-0 B-Mets win. Brian got a no-decision June 12th vs. Norwich, despite allowing just two Julio Cordido solo homers in seven innings, a game Binghamton would win 3-2 in 10 innings. The righthander's first loss of the year came May 14th at Norwich, as he gave up five runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 innings, chased after A.J. LaBarbera hit a three-run double off him in the fifth.

Background: The 24-year-old Arizonan is in his third professional season after being drafted by the Mets in the seventh round in 2003 out of the University of Southern California.
