Altoona Curve News Release
PORTLAND, ME-- The Altoona Curve offense scored a season-high seven runs on four hits in the second inning highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Jose Bautista as the Curve held on to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs, 10-7, Tuesday night at Hadlock Field in Portland.
In the seven-run second inning, Ray Sadler and Carlos Maldonado recorded RBI base hits. Back-to-back walks to Rajai Davis and Rich Thompson plated the third Altoona run of the inning. Portland starter Kason Gabbard (6-7) uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Maldonado to score the fourth run of the game.
Bautista made it 7-0 with his ninth home run of the season. Bautista, 1-for-5 on Tuesday, is hitting .354 (23-for-65) with five home runs and 25 RBI in his last 16 games. Bautista leads the team with 50 RBI in 69 games this season.
The Curve plated two more runs in the top of the third inning as Craig Stansberry doubled home Sadler. Stansberry scored when Rajai Davis reached on an error by third baseman Raul Nieves. Sadler closed out the scoring for the Curve, hitting his fifth home run of the season off Portland reliever Marc Deschenes in the top of the seventh inning.
Curve reliever Brady Borner (3-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on two hits striking out five to pick up the win in relief of starter Eddie Candelario.
Candelario, promoted to Altoona earlier in the day to fill the roster spot vacated by Mike Connolly's promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis, started and pitched just 2 2/3 innings surrendering five runs, four earned.
Brandon Moss led the Sea Dog offense belting his 11th home run off Candelario in the Portland four run third inning. Moss also walked and scored twice.
Justin Kaye pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 20th save of the season, leaving him just one save shy of tying the franchise record for saves in a season set by Todd Ozias back in 2003.
The Curve won for the ninth time in 12 games away from Blair County Ballpark. With the win, the Curve are 15-12 in the month of June and avoid having a losing month since August 2002.
Altoona will send right-hander Matt Peterson (6-4, 6.28) to the mound in the middle game of their series Wednesday night against Portland right-hander Chris Smith in a 7 PM start.
