Baumgartner, Helmer assigned, Brown placed on waivers

Today the Vancouver Canucks announced that defenceman Nolan Baumgartner and Bryan Helmer have been assigned to the Manitoba Moose. Forward Mike Brown has been placed on waivers and if he is not claimed by another team, he will be assigned to Manitoba.

Helmer, 30, has played in five pre-season games for the Canucks recording one assist and nine penalty minutes. Last season, Helmer played in 40 games for Vancouver and recorded five goals, five assists for 10 points and 53 penalty minutes. The 6'1 defenceman was recalled to the Canucks on December 28, 2001 and played the rest of the season with the NHL club. Prior to his call-up, Helmer led Moose defencemen with 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) with 69 PIM in 34 AHL matches.

Baumgartner, 26, has played in six pre-season games for the Canucks recording one goal and one assist. Last season, he played in 76 games for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, recording 10 goals, 24 assists for 34 points and 72 penalty minutes. Baumgartner signed as a free agent with the Canucks on July 9, 2002.

Brown, 23, split time last season with the Moose and Canucks. With Manitoba, the rugged forward had 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) with 155 PIM in 31 AHL contests. In Vancouver, he played in 15 NHL games and had 72 points. Brown had seven stints with the Moose during the 2001-02 season.
