Battery Power: Wada, Whiteside Lead Cubs to Series Win

Colorado Springs, CO - Tsuyoshi Wada shut down the Colorado Springs Sky Sox over 6.2 innings and his batterymate, Eli Whiteside, provided the game-winning RBI with a fifth-inning single to lift the Iowa Cubs (43-38) past the Sky Sox (35-48) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field in the teams final meeting this season. The Cubs took 11 of the 16 contests between the clubs this year, including three-of-five over the weekend. Iowa posted their seventh shutout to tie them with Colorado Springs and Nashville for the PCL lead.
Wada continued his dominance of the Sky Sox this season in throwing his 11th quality start in 16 outings on the year. The southpaw scattered six hits and struck out eight, compared to just one walk. Wada departed in the seventh inning with a man at second, two outs, and the Cubs clinging to a one-run lead. Manager Marty Pevey brought in RH Marcus Hatley to face pinch-hitter Paul Janish, and Hatley got Janish to fly out to right field on a 3-2 count to preserve the lead. Wada has given up only three earned runs in 17.2 innings (1.57 ERA) to Colorado Springs this season, including shutting out the Sky Sox in 11.2 innings over two outings at Security Service Field.
Hatley stayed in for the eight and gave up a leadoff single to Rafael Ynoa before retiring Nolan Aranado on a fly ball to center field. LH Zac Rosscup was then summoned from the bullpen, and he induced a fly ball off the bat of Kyle Parker. Pevey followed by calling on closer Blake Parker for a four-out save. The right-hander got the final out of the eighth inning, and after giving up a one-out single in the ninth inning, he got Jackson Williams to ground into a double play to end the game. Parker is a perfect 17-for-17 in save opportunities and leads the PCL in that category, while ranking fourth in all of minor league baseball. Parker's 58 saves in his Iowa career are a franchise record.
The I-Cubs got their first run in the fifth inning off LH Brian Burres by cashing in on a leadoff walk. Ryan Kalish drew a five-pitch free pass, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored when Whiteside roped a single to center field, snapping a 14-inning scoreless streak. Whiteside picked up his second hit and first RBI since re-joining Iowa on Thursday.
The Cubs got an insurance run in the eighth inning when Javy Baez belted a double off the right field wall to score Matt Szczur from first base. Baez also walked and singled in three at-bats, and has reached base safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting .342 (13-for-38) with four doubles, seven walks and eight RBI in that stretch.
Arismendy Alcantara racked up two more hits for the Cubs. It was his ninth multi-hit game over his last 11 contests, and he is batting .500 (21-for-42) with nine extra-base hits, 11 runs scored, and nine RBI in this streak. He has hit safely in a season-best eight straight games, including reaching base in 23 of his last 24 games.
Burres, making his fourth start of the season, worked a season-high six innings, allowing five hits, three walks, and striking out four. He worked out of multiple jams, and held the Cubs to one hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. Iowa stranded five baserunners with Burres on the hill, and six in the game.
The Cubs return to Principal Park to play five games in four days against the first place Omaha Storm Chasers beginning Monday night at 7:05. RH Carlos Pimentel (1-4, 4.56) makes his ninth start of the year for the Cubs against RH Sugar Ray Marimon (5-4, 3.74). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m.
