Buss Belts Cats Past 51s, 2-1

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento River Cats (48-35) closed out their series with the Las Vegas 51s (48-35) with a 2-1 victory on K-Love Sunday Funday at Raley Field, taking three-out-of-four games in the weekend series.
A wild pitch by River Cats starter Arnold Leon (8-2, 4.55 ERA) in the top of the first inning gave the 51s a 1-0 lead early. With catcher Kevin Plawecki at the plate, Leon threw one in the dirt that squeaked past catcher Ryan Ortiz, scoring Las Vegas shortstop Matt Reynolds from third.
Cats second baseman Jake Elmore started the bottom of the second with a perfectly-executed bunt-single down the third-base line. Second baseman Jose Martinez would drive Elmore in later in the frame tie the score at one apiece. Martinez finished the contest 1-for-3 with an RBI.
For the third time in two days, Sacramento center fielder Nick Buss broke a tie-game between the two clubs, smacking a solo blast to right-center field off of 51s starter Darin Gorski (2-2, 3.97 ERA) in the bottom of the fifth inning. The home run was Buss' fourth of 2014 and his first of the season off a left-handed pitcher.
River Cats pitchers gave the Las Vegas lineup fits all throughout the night. They held 51s batters to just four hits in the contest, and at one point, set down 20-of-24 Las Vegas hitters.
Leon picked up his club-leading eighth victory of the season, twirling six innings of one-run baseball, allowing three hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts. Reliever Fernando Rodriguez tossed perfect seventh and eighth innings, striking out two in the process.
Evan Scribner pitched a scoreless ninth inning, stranding the potential tying-run at third base to pick up save number 11 on the season. He now is 11-for-13 in save opportunities in 2014. The win ties the River Cats with the 51s for the best record in the Pacific Coast League.
Taking the loss for Las Vegas was the southpaw Gorski, who went six innings and surrendered two earned runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out eight Cats hitters.
The rival Fresno Grizzlies come to Raley Field on Baseball Bingo Monday presented by Cache Creek Resort Casino to start a four-game set with the Sacramento River Cats. Right-hander Dan Straily (4-3, 4.79 ERA) takes the mound for Sacramento against Fresno lefty Jose De Paula (1-3, 5.52 ERA) with first pitch called for 7:05 p.m.
