Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville Bats (20-33) tallied off five runs in the fourth inning in route to a 7-2 victory over the Gwinnett Stripers (24-30) on Sunday afternoon at Louisville Slugger Field. The win marks the first series sweep of the season for the Bats and their first since sweeping Gwinnett in a three-game series on May 30 to June 2 during the 2017 campaign.

After a solo home run by Stripers' left fielder Dustin Peterson in the first, the Bats tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning following a one-out triple by left fielder Phillip Ervin who was plated by second baseman Nick Senzel on a sacrifice-fly during the next at-bat.

In the fifth frame the Bats took advantage of back-to-back wild pitches by Gwinnett starter Matt Wisler (1-3, 5.03) to plate Mason Williams, who doubled with one out, to take the 2-1 lead. Wisler then loaded the bases before Ervin stepped to the plate and connected for another triple that cleared the bases. Senzel then singled home Ervin to extend the Louisville lead to 6-1. The Bats added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by shortstop Blake Trahan that scored Williams.

The Stripers added a single run to their total in the ninth thanks to an RBI single by Rio Ruiz drove home Peterson.

Ervin, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two triples in the game is the first time since Billy Hamilton hit two triples in a contest at Pawtucket on August 13, 2013. Right fielder Gabriel Guerrero finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Williams also went 2-for-4 with a double. Senzel finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.

Following Peterson's solo shot in the first, Louisville starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan (1-4, 4.18) settled in and tossed six-scoreless innings, including four three-up-three-down frames on his way to picking up his first victory of the season. The lefty tossed seven innings and struck out seven batters while only giving up three hits, one walk, and one run on 87 pitches, 56 strikes. Gwinnett's Wisler tossed four innings and gave up seven hits, six runs, six earned runs, and three walks.

The Bats look to extend their four-game winning streak on Tuesday as they hit the road to Pawtucket on Tuesday. Left-handed pitcher Cody Reed (0-4, 4.63) looks to become the sixth Louisville pitcher in a row to have a quality start as he matches up against Jalen Beeks (3-3, 2.56) of the Red Sox.
