Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Five Louisville pitchers held the Indianapolis Indians scoreless over 14 innings of play and first baseman Yonder Alonso went 3-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Bats to victories in both games of the doubleheader, 6-0 and 1-0, over the Tribe on Monday night at Victory Field.
With the two losses, Indianapolis' record falls to 44-42, while Louisville improves to 41-45 on the season with the pair of victories. The two wins also give the Bats the 6-4 season series advantage over the Indians.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Louisville scratched across the only run it would need in the contest in the top half of the first inning when CF Gary Matthews Jr. doubled on a line drive to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by SS Zack Cozart and then scored on a ground ball single off the bat of Alonso. The Bats' first baseman watched back-to-back pitches before he pounced on the third offering of his at-bat and singled home the eventual game-winning run.
Louisville starter Ben Jukich (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO) earned his third win of the season with five dominant innings of work, while LHP Aroldis Chapman (1.0, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) earned his third hold with an inning of scoreless relief and RHP Carlos Fisher (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R) notched his second save with a scoreless ninth.
Indianapolis RHP Mike Crotta (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) was strapped with the tough luck loss after allowing one run on only five hits in 5.2 innings of work. LHP Wil Ledezma (1.1 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) pitched well in relief for the Tribe as he kept them within striking distance of the Bats when he struck out RF Danny Dorn with the bases loaded in the top half of the sixth inning.
In a game that featured only one run and just 10 total hits, Bats' CF Gary Matthews (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 2B) was the only player for either team to record multiple hits on the evening.
The first game of the doubleheader finished in much the same fashion as the second game of the twinbill with Indianapolis falling 6-0 to Louisville.
The Bats, who scored at least one run in each of the first four innings of the seven inning contest, jumped out to an early 1-0 with a single run in the top half of the first.
With SS Zack Cozart standing at second base with two outs in the first, Todd Frazier stepped to the dish and, after taking a ball and a strike to bring the count to 1-1, the Bats' left fielder doubled on a line drive to right field to give Louisville the 1-0 lead.
Louisville tacked on two more runs in the second to take a three-run advantage when RF Wladimir Balentien singled to lead off the inning and, one out later, came around to score on 2B Chris Valaika's first home run of the season. Valaika's home run to right center field came on the first offering of his at-bat and gave the Bats the 3-0 edge over the Indians.
The Bats added another two runs in the top of the third inning before capping their scoring with a single run in the fourth frame to take a decisive 6-0 advantage. 1B Yonder Alonso kicked off the third inning with a solo home run before Frazier smacked the Bats' second consecutive extra-base hit with a two-bagger to center field. After a ground ball out moved Frazier to third with one out, Balentien gave the Bats the 5-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
Louisville then capped its scoring in the fourth with a single tally to take the decisive 6-0 lead. Cozart walked with one out in the inning and, after stealing second base, came around on Alonso's 14th double of the season and second RBI of the contest.
In his first start for the Indians' this season, LHP Dana Eveland (2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was tagged with his first Triple-A loss of the 2010 campaign after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work. Louisville RHP Chad Reineke (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 SO) earned his fifth win of the season with five scoreless innings before LHP Daniel Ray Herrera (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) closed out the contest with two scoreless frames of his own.
Three total batters registered multiple hit efforts in the contest, with 1B Brian Myrow (2-for-3) tallying two base knocks for the Indians and both Alonso (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI) and Frazier (3-for-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI) each recording more than one base knock for the Bats.
Indianapolis now hits the road for two more contests against the Louisville Bats beginning on Tuesday, July 6 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is the probable starter for the Tribe, while LHP Matt Maloney is the anticipated starter for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
