Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Jorge Vazquez powered the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees to another victory Monday night, with his three-run, sixth inning homerun driving the team past the Rochester Red Wings 9-5.
The Yankees entered the inning trailing 3-1 with Red Wings starter Jeff Manship stalling the team's offense.
But that changed three batters into the sixth. Juan Miranda started the inning with a single to right-one of his four hits on the day-and moved to second after Jesus Montero worked a four-pitch walk.
Vazquez followed Montero and, after falling behind 0-2, hit a homerun over the left field wall for his fifth of the year.
The Yankees scored at least one run in the final four innings of the game and finished with 15 hits. Through two games in the series, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense has pounded out 31 hits and has scored 19 runs.
Jason Hirsh started the game for the Yankees and pitched well despite some letdowns from his defense. The tall righty went four innings in his first start since June 6, allowing three runs-one earned-on five hits.
Hirsh struck out six batters and walked just one.
Romulo Sanchez, who was originally slated to start the game for the Yankees, came in to relieve Hirsh and would pick up the win after tossing two innings of one-hit ball. Sanchez struck out three and walked none in his fifth win of the year.
The teams meet in the third game of the series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
