JACKSON, Tenn. - The Suns scored six unanswered runs, but lost to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 7-6, in front of 1,799 fans Thursday at Pringles Park.
Diamond Jaxx pitcher Ricky Nolasco hit a two-run, bases-loaded single off Suns starter Justin Orenduff, giving West Tenn a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. Reliever Glenn Bott allowed another inherited runner to score, crediting Orenduff (0-1) with seven runs over 3-1/3 innings in a losing Suns debut. Orenduff went to three-ball counts to nine of the 18 batters he faced.
The Suns battled back from a 7-0 deficit, bringing up the tying run several times. The Suns had five consecutive two-out hits in the sixth off Nolasco and reliever Jon Searles, bringing the score to within 7-5.
Todd Donovan had the Suns' only two hits vs. Nolasco over the first four innings and went 3-for-5. The Southern League ERA leader, Nolasco (7-0) earned the victory despite allowing five runs over 5-2/3 innings.
Jon Weber tripled to lead off the ninth, breaking a 1-for-20 slump and scored on Andy LaRoche's RBI bounceout, making the score, 7-6, off Diamond Jaxx reliever Thomas Atlee. Atlee induced a game-ending rollout by James Loney to earn his first save.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (0-1, 7.20 ERA) is scheduled to oppose West Tenn righty Carlos Marmol (first AA start) at 8:05 p.m. Friday as the Suns (39-34, 1-2 second half) face the Diamond Jaxx (46-26, 2-1) in the final game of a four-game series.
