Bats Drop Opener at Victory Field, 5-2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Louisville Bats (53-77) dropped Friday night's series opener to the Indianapolis Indians (63-67) by a 5-2 score at Victory Field.

In the first matchup between the clubs since July 3, Indianapolis left 15 runners on base but still got the job done with five runs on 13 hits. Right-handed starter James Marvel (5-0, 2.72) did not allow a hit through four innings, finishing his night with 7.0 innings pitched, six hits, two runs, no walks and six strikeouts.

Right-hander Keury Mella (8-13, 4.90), who has been solid for the Bats all season long, went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out six on 106 pitches and 65 strikes. The Indians scored two runs off Mella in the bottom of the first, tacking on another run in both the third and fourth innings.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Bats' offense came to life with two runs on three hits, with a Rob Refsnyder single, Alex Blandino double and Ryan Lavarnway single. Nick Longhi also contributed an RBI in the frame with a groundout.

Louisville relievers Jackson Stephens, Sal Romano and Matt Bowman combined for 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out seven.

The Bats and Indians finish up the Indianapolis portion of their three-game series with their final matchup of the season at Victory Field. Right-hander Jesus Reyes (1-4, 4.50) starts for Louisville, set to oppose Indians lefty Brandon Waddell (2-6, 9.59) with a 7:05 Saturday first pitch.
