Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Exactly one month before his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, former Memphis Chicks star Tim Raines will return to The Bluff City for an appearance at AutoZone Park headlining "Chicks Night" on Friday, June 30.
Fans may purchase a specialty ticket that includes a private meet-and-greet with Raines from 5:00-6:00. The $125 ticket includes a Club Level seat for that night's game, plus access to the Club Level buffet, in addition to the private meet-and-greet.
Raines will be signing autographs on the concourse from 6:00-6:45 and from 7:15-8:00 after a break to throw the ceremonial first pitch. The Redbirds will be producing a "Chicks Night featuring Tim Raines" commemorative photo to distribute that evening, which is the only item Raines will be able to autograph.
Also on Chicks Night, the Redbirds will be wearing special throwback uniforms, which will be auctioned during the game with proceeds benefiting the Redbirds Community Fund. Fans winning a jersey in the auction will go onto the field after the game to meet the player or coach and have it signed.
Raines played 145 games for the Double-A Chicks in 1979, stealing 59 bases and hitting .290 with 25 doubles, 10 triples, five home runs, and 50 RBI. His 160 hits on the season led the team, which finished with an 82-62 record under manager Billy Garner. The Chicks won the Western Division's first-half championship behind the all-star play of Raines, David Hostetler, and Charlie Lea.
Raines reached the big leagues the next season with the Montreal Expos, which began his Hall of Fame career that spanned 23 seasons (1980-2002) with the Expos, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Florida Marlins. He is the only player in Major League history with at least 100 triples, 150 home runs, and 600 stolen bases. He is also the sole player in MLB history with four different seasons of at least 50 extra-base hits and 70 steals.
A consistent speedster, only Raines has stolen 70-plus bases in six-straight seasons (1981-86), and he ranks first among players with at least 400 stolen base attempts with an 84.7 percent success rate.
Raines, who was voted into the Hall on his final year of Baseball Writers' Association of America eligibility, will be inducted July 30 alongside Jeff Bagwell, Ivan Rodriguez, John Schuerholz, and former Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig. Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown runs July 28-31.
