Barton Named ECHL Player of the Week

WHEELING,WV - The Wheeling Nailers, AA affiliate for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that Chris Barton has been named the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Nov. 14-20, becoming the first Nailer to take home the honor during the 2011-12 season.

In three games last week for the Nailers, Barton, 24, netted four goals, and added two assists, while also posting a plus-4 rating, as Wheeling picked up two wins against Elmira and Trenton.

Barton's week began on Tuesday against Elmira, when he scored two of his goals, and also picked up an assist on Cody Chupp's winning goal, helping the Nailers to a 5-3 victory over Elmira. On Friday, Barton continued his success, recording one goal and one assist in Friday's 3-2 overtime win over Trenton. The goal came with 1:55 left in the second period, to tie the game at two, and ultimately force overtime. Finally, on Sunday, Barton lit the lamp one more time in a 3-2 setback against the Titans.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, Barton is tied for second in the ECHL with 11 goals and is fourth with 20 points. He also leads all rookies in points and goals, and is tied for third among rookies with nine assists. Barton is currently on a nine-game point streak, the second longest in the ECHL this season, during which he has recorded 17 of his 20 points.

Prior to this season, Barton played in 141 career games at Merrimack College, where he scored 48 goals and 71 assists for 119 points. He also skated in one game in the AHL for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season.

On behalf of Chris Barton, a case of pucks will be donated to a Wheeling youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 25,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.

The Nailers return to the ice on Thanksgiving Day when they travel to Duluth, Georgia to battle the Gladiators.Catch the game live on RTV 9 and the MIX 97.3FM.

The team will return to WesBanco Arena on Friday December 3rd when they battle the Trenton Titans. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free team poster courtesy of WesBanco Bank, The McLure Hotel, Generations Pub, and Panhandle Cleaning.
