Barteaux Appointed as Rebels Captain for 2019-20 Season

Red Deer Rebels News Release

Veteran blueliner Dawson Barteaux will have plenty on his plate during the 2019-20 Western Hockey League season.

Not only will the 19-year-old Dallas Stars prospect anchor the Red Deer Rebels' back end, but he'll serve as the team's official on-ice leader. The Foxwarren, Man., native was anointed as the Rebels' captain late Tuesday afternoon, succeeding Reese Johnson.

"It's a big honour. The names before me (previous captains) are obviously big names," he said. "For sure, coming off a year like last year with Reese Johnson . . . he's one of the best leaders I've ever had so I kind of look up to him and model my leadership after him.

"That's what I'm planning to do this year."

With the Rebels icing a very young team in the upcoming season, Barteaux was always going to take on a major leadership role.

"Whether I had the 'C' or not I was going to be a leader," he said. "It doesn't make a huge difference. Obviously it's an honour but nothing really changes."

The Rebels coaching staff hasn't announced alternate captains for the season, but the likes of Ethan Sakowich, Brett Davis and Cam Hausinger are prime candidates.

Donohoe trade good for both sides

Hunter Donohoe was, in all likelihood, never going to play a regular shift for the Rebels this coming season.

The Seattle Thunderbirds felt a need for a veteran presence on their blueline, which led to a trade between the teams Monday which sent Donohoe, 19, to the US Division team for 2002-born netminder Louden Hogg and a conditional seventh-round pick in next year's WHL bantam draft.

"It just seemed like a good fit at the right time for both Seattle and us, and for Dono," said Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter. "He can go somewhere and get settled early in camp and prove to their coaching staff and management that hopefully he can be an everyday player at this level."

Hogg has made inroads with USA Hockey and suited up for his home country in the recent Hlinka Gretzky tournament in the Czech Republic.

The Cheyenne, Wyoming, native will play high school hockey in Minnesota in the 2019-20 season and could very well shun the Rebels in favour of landing a college scholarship south of the border.

"He's a goalie who our Minnesota (based) scout has seen play a lot," said Sutter. "At this point in time he's someone who wants to stay in the US and possibly go the NCAA route.

"But that can change. When his name got brought into the mix we thought why wouldn't we (make the trade). You never have enough depth in goal and if he changes his mind at some point and wants to give major junior a shot . . . he's a decent goalie, he played at the Hlinka Gretzky tournament, which says a lot.

"Right now he's settled in playing hockey in Minnesota. That's what he wants to do this season and we'll see where it goes."

Meanwhile, Donohoe has an opportunity to stay in the WHL. With the Rebels boasting an impressive stable of younger rearguards, that opportunity almost certainly wasn't going to present itself in Red Deer.

"The young guys need a chance to play, and being a 19-year-old he wouldn't be happy not being in the lineup every day," said Sutter.
