Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons and the Huntsville Stars locked up in an old-fashioned pitchers duel on Monday evening but the Barons came out victorious as they won the series opener 2-1 in front of 1,740 at the Hoover Met. The win moves the Barons four games behind Huntsville for first place in the Western Division with seven games to go and keeps Birmingham's hopes for a first-half division crown alive.

The Stars got on the board first with a run in the third off starter Enemencio Pacheco. Noochie Varner singled and advanced to second on a single by Dave Krynzel and later stole third before advancing home on an errant throw by Barons catcher Carlos Maldonado. Birmingham would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom half as Juan Piniella scored on a RBI groundout by Chad Durham.

The score would stay knotted until the seventh when the Barons finally broke through against Huntsville starter Pedro Liriano (4-7). Gabe Alvarez grounded out to Liriano to start the inning before Scott Bikowski singled up the middle to put a runner on. Bikowski then stole second to move into scoring position before Darron Ingram punched a single to center to plate the go-ahead run.

Pacheco hurled six solid innings giving up just one run on six hits and three strikeouts but got the no decision. Reliever Jeff Bajenaru picked up his fourth win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings and Royce Ring notched his 14th save by throwing a perfect ninth inning.

Tomorrow the Barons will try and stay alive once again by sending out LHP Jim Bullard (1-1, 4.12) to face LHP Derek Lee (7-2, 3.51) in game two of the four-game series. Game time is 7:00 and all the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
