Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears parent club, the San Diego Padres, has promoted BayBears' shortstop Khalil Greene to their Triple-A club in Portland, Oregon. The Padres also moved first baseman Jon Benick to the BayBears from Single-A Lake Elsinore.
The move was necessitated by an injury to Padres' shortstop, Ramon Vasquez, who was placed on the disabled list Sunday. The Padres then promoted Portland shortstop and former BayBear, Donaldo Mendez, leaving a hole on the Beavers' roster.
Greene, the Padres' first-round draft choice in 2002, heads to Portland with a .275 batting average and 20 RBI. He hit a combined ..295 in May and was batting an even .400 in the month of June.
Benick, a switch-hitting first baseman, was batting .275 with seven homeruns and 38 RBI, with Lake Elsinore in the California League, at the time of his promotion. A ninth-round draft choice by the Padres out of the University of Virginia in 2001, Benick ranked third in the Padres minor league organization with 15 homeruns last season and fifth with 73 RBI while playing 133 games with the Fort Wayne Wizards in the Midwest League.
