Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS - Richard Sullivan made his AA debut against the offensive juggernaut that is the Birmingham Barons Thursday night. He gave up 10 hits, but held the Barons to three runs in his six innings on the hill. The two teams went back and forth with Birmingham finally taking a 5-4 lead in the seventh. Mississippi tied it in the bottom of the ninth, but the Barons got a two-run homer in the 11th to win it, 7-5.

After going down in order in the first, Birmingham got to work in the second. Five consecutive singles from Stefan Gartrell, Javier Colina, Christian Marrero, Jared Price and CJ Lang plated two runs for the Barons. Marrero and Price drove in Gartrell and Colina, respectively, to give the Barons a 2-0 lead.

The Braves answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Eric Campbell singled and scored from first on a double by Kala Ka'aihue. After two, Birmingham led 2-1.

The Barons extended the lead to 3-1 when Christian Marrero doubled and scored on a CJ Lang single in the fourth. Mississippi answered again, this time tying the game on a Kody Kirkland two-run homer. It was the Braves first home run at home since June 3rd.

The M-Braves took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the sixth. Brandon Hicks reached on an infield single and scored when Willie Cabrera drew a bases loaded walk. The Barons escaped disaster when JC Boscan's drive to deep left was snared by David Cook. After six, Mississippi led 4-3.

The Braves returned the favor in the seventh. Hudson and Cook hit back-to-back singles and Gartrell and Colina drew back-to-back walks to force in the game-tying run (Hudson). Marrero then hit a sac-fly to center that scored Cook with the go-ahead run. Birmingham led 5-4.

For the second straight night, the M-Braves rallied in the ninth - this time to tie the game. Greg Creek singled and moved into scoring position on a 4-3 groundout by Campbell. Hicks then hit a blooper into left field that was fielded by Cook. Creek rounded third and Cook's throw had him out at the plate, but Barons third baseman Dayan Viciedo cut the throw to the plate allowing Creek to score the game-tying run. After nine, the game was tied at five.

The score remained tied until the top of the 11th. David Cook's two-run homer gave the Barons a 7-5 lead and the win.

Daniel Hudson gave up three runs on five hits in three innings but did not factor into the decision. John Lujan gave up a run in his inning on the hill. Matt Long threw two scoreless innings for the Barons. Fernando Hernandez gave up a run in the ninth to suffer his third blown save against the M-Braves this year. He stayed on and got his second win of the year. Jhonny Nunez threw a scoreless 11th to earn his third save of the year.

Richard Sullivan pitched well in his AA debut. He gave up three runs on 10 hits in six innings and left the game with a 4-3 lead. Kevin Gunderson gave up two runs in his inning on the hill. Jerome Gamble threw two scoreless innings of relief. Cory Gearrin gave up the two-run homer in the 11th and fell to 0-1 on the season.

The fifth game of this six-game set will be Friday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Mississippi's Edgar Osuna will take the hill against Birmingham's Kyle McCulloch.

On Friday night, the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free Mississippi Braves Baseball Bank. After the game, the Braves Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza will delight those in attendance. Friday night's promotions are compliments of Entergy Nuclear.
