
Southern League Announces All-Star Game Managers and Umpires

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs has announced the coaching staffs and umpiring crew for the 2009 Southern League All-Star Game scheduled for July 13 at Regions Park in Birmingham, AL. The Southern League selected the staff of the host Birmingham Barons to coach the South Division and the staff of the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to lead the North Division.
North Division Manager
PHIL PLANTIER - WEST TENN DIAMOND JAXX
Former Major League Baseball veteran Phil Plantier has been chosen to manage the North Division in the 2009 Southern League All-Star Game. Plantier, who had 91 home runs and 292 RBI in eight major league seasons, is in his second year on the West Tenn coaching staff. Last season, as hitting coach, Plantier guided the first half North Division champion Diamond Jaxx to a .266 team batting average, which ranked third in the league. In 2007, Plantier led the South Coast League's Macon Music to a 58-31 overall record in his first managerial season. Joining Plantier at the All-Star Game will be Diamond Jaxx Pitching Coach Tom Dettore, Hitting Coach Terry Pollreisz and Trainer Matt Toth.

EVERARDO MAGALLANES - BIRMINGHAM BARONS
In his first year at the helm in Birmingham, Magallanes will skipper the South Division in his home park. His first season has been one to remember, as Magallanes led the Barons to a 48-21 first-half record, the best mark in professional baseball through June 21. Birmingham won the first half South Division championship, finishing 11.5 games ahead of the Mobile BayBears. Prior to joining the Barons, Magallanes managed three seasons in the Angels organization and was named the Arizona League's Manager of the Year in 2006. At press time, Magallanes owned a career record of 227-180. Joining Magallanes in the South Division dugout will be Barons Pitching Coach J.R. Perdew, Hitting Coach Andy Tomberlin and Trainer Joe Geck. The four-man umpiring crew for the All-Star Game will consist of crew chief Gerard Ascani, Craig Barron, Travis Brown and Jordan Baker.
