Shell Deals Jaxx Past BayBears to End Losing Streak

MOBILE, ALA. (JUNE 25, 2009) - Steven Shell dealt the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (1-3) its first victory of the second half on Thursday night over the Mobile Bay Bears (3-1), 6-1. Shell's six shutout innings provided the pitching and homeruns from Matt Mangini, Greg Halman and Colt Morton helped snap the three game losing streak.

The Jaxx jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Jaxx catcher, Colt Morton drove in Ezequiel Carrera from second to give the Jaxx the early 1-0 lead. Ezequiel Carrera opened the game with a single and Colt Morton has six RBI in five games played for the Jaxx.

Greg Halman, playing in his first game since coming off the DL broke out for his first homer since May 23rd in the top of the sixth. The homer for Halman was his 14th of the season to lead the team. Two batters later, Matt Mangini struck for his second homer of the series, a two-run shot to right. Marshall Hubbard walked before Mangini went deep.

Cody Evans (3-7) was pulled during the Jaxx three run sixth inning. Evans went 5.1 innings on Thursday night. He gave up four runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking four. He was relieved in the sixth inning by Chase Christensen.

Diamond Jaxx starter, Steven Shell (2-0) goes six shutout innings scattering two hits. Shell has given up just one earned run in his 15 innings with the Jaxx. He has only allowed two hits in each of his last two starts.

Ricky Orta and Phillippe Aumont dealt scoreless frames for the Jaxx in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Jaxx added insurance in the top of the eighth. Colt Morton hit his third homerun of the season and his second of the series to give the Jaxx a 5-0 lead. Morton has three homers in his first seven games and six RBI. Morton went 2-for-5 in the game.

Matt Mangini drove in his third run of the game by singling up the middle to score Greg Halman. Mangini goes 2-for-4 in the game with a homer and three RBI.

Ezequiel Carrera posts a 1-for-3 night at the plate with another runs scored and two stolen bases. Carrera has four steals in the series and now 16 on the season.

The Diamond Jaxx shutout was turned away as Cyle Hankerd doubled off of Jaxx reliever Josh Fields, bringing home Bryan Byrne. Fields gave up his first run since June 3rd.

Justin Souza (4-6, 3.32) starts for the Jaxx in game five of this six game series on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile. On the other side, RHP Barry Enright (5-5, 3.81) makes his 15th start of the season for the BayBears.
