Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (16-25) lost a heartbreaker on Thursday night as Trey Michalczewski's three-run double walked off the Birmingham Barons (19-21) in the bottom of the ninth of the series opener at Regions Field by a score of 12-11.
Genesis Cabrera made his ninth start of the year for the Butter and Blue and cruised through the first inning, before the Biscuits provided him with a 4-0 lead in the second. The Biscuits opened up the top of the second with five-consecutive singles from Brandon Lowe, Ryan Boldt, Brett Sullivan, Mike Brosseau and Jermaine Palacios, and finished the inning with six against Birmingham starter Matt Tomshaw.
But the Barons answered back in the bottom of the second with a five-spot against Cabrera, thanks to a two-run single by Johnny Giavotella, a Danny Mendick RBI-double, a balk, and a Zack Collins RBI-single. Montgomery fired back in the third, however, with three more runs on a Sullivan sac fly, a Brosseau RBI-double, and a Palacios RBI-single to retake the lead at 7-5.
Montgomery then tacked on three more runs in the sixth on an RBI-groundout by Nick Solak, a Lowe sac fly, and a Boldt RBI-double, and were leading comfortably at 10-5 midway through six.
But the Barons would chip away at the deficit, scoring a run each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, to pull to within two at 10-8. Palacios would collect his third RBI-single of the night in the ninth to add some insurance for the Biscuits, as the game shifted to the bottom of the ninth.
Roel Ramirez was on to try to close things out, but his throwing error allowed lead-off man and former Biscuit, Ryan Brett, who had homered earlier in the game, to reach base. Then Collins singled before Eloy Jimenez drove in Brett with a sac fly to make it 11-9. Seby Zavala then singled and Jordan Harrison was summoned from the bullpen.
Harrison then walked Matt Rose to load the bases and that briught up Michalczewski, who grounded one down the left field line that banged off the angled sidewall and cleared the bases with Rose diving in ahead of the throw in from left with the winning run.
The Biscuits will try to rebound in game two on Friday when J.D. Martin (1-6) takes on Dane Dunning (2-0) at 7:05 PM.
The Biscuits will continue their 10-game road trip until they return home to Montgomery on May 29 when the Jackson Generals will be in town for Wings Fest and the Gathering of Eagles Celebration. The series will also feature Country Music Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by WLWI on Thursday, May 31, Gump in the Gump featuring Greenbow Biscuits Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 1, and Flight Night featuring a C-130 Figurine Giveaway presented by AUM and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 2.
