
Barons Sign Carkner And Fahey

CLEVELAND â The Cleveland Barons announced today the signing defensemen Matt Carkner and Jim Fahey for the 2004-05 season. Wayne Thomas, General Manager of the Cleveland Barons, made the announcement.
Matt Carkner, 23, rejoins the Barons for his fourth season in Cleveland. The 6'4", 230-pound defenseman put together a career season in 2003-04 setting career highs in goals (2), assists (11), and points (13). The Winchester, ONT native also set a personal best and Barons franchise high with a +18 plus/minus rating. During the Barons 2003-04 playoff run, Carkner appeared in all nine games and recorded three assists and 39 penalty minutes. In 173 regular season AHL games, Carkner has recorded three goals and 18 assists for 21 points and 554 penalty minutes. Carkner was named the Barons American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year in 2003-04.
Jim Fahey, 25, has split the last two seasons between Cleveland and San Jose. Named the Sharks Playstation Rookie of the Year in 2003, Fahey has registered 1 goal, 21 assists (1-21-22), and 51 penalty minutes in 58 career NHL regular season games. Fahey appeared in two postseason contests for the Sharks last season and did not record a point. The 6'0", 205-pound native of Boston, MA has appeared in 57 career games with the Barons over two seasons. In the time, he has registered four goals, 32 assists (4-32-36), and 106 penalty minutes. A decorated collegiate athlete, Fahey was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award during his senior season at Norteastern University in 2001-02.
"These players add to an already strong nucleus of defensemen," stated Thomas. "Both have been strong contributors to the Barons in the past and we expect them to continue their development."
Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The Barons are set to open the 2004-05 home schedule on Saturday, October 16th at National City Rink at Gund Arena at 7pm against the Manitoba Moose.
