BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (62-65, 33-24) fell to the Birmingham Barons (57-67, 30-25) by a 9-3 score in the third game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Tuesday night.
Birmingham right-handed relief pitcher Vince Arobio (3-1) earned the victory with three scoreless innings on the mound. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher McKenzie Mills (1-8) took the loss, working an inning and two-thirds where he allowed six runs (all earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Brian Miller collected a one-out double, then was brought home on an RBI single by Stone Garrett to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Miller, playing on his 24th birthday, continued his big night in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to grow the lead to 2-0.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Sixto Sanchez worked the first four innings in scoreless fashion, limiting the Barons to three hits with no walks and a strikeout.
Mills took over for Sanchez in the bottom of the fifth, and in that inning allowed a two-run home run to Birmingham's Laz Rivera that tied the game at 2-2. An inning later in the bottom of the sixth, the Barons rallied for five runs on six hits to take control of the game and lead 7-2. Birmingham's Damek Tomscha added an RBI single in the seventh to grow the lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Rivera homered again for Birmingham, a solo shot off the left field foul pole off Jacksonville left-handed reliever Jordan Guerrero to make it 9-2.
J.C. Millan in the top of the ninth got Jacksonville back on the scoreboard with a solo homer to left center to cut Birmingham's lead to 9-3, which would be the final.
Barons right-handed starting pitcher John Parke had a no decision, working five innings where he allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
