Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons scored four late runs, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Tennessee Smokies 4-2 Sunday afternoon in front of 1,555 fans at Regions Park. The Barons rally began in the 6th inning as they loaded the bases with two outs for Seth Loman. Loman would deliver, serving a single to left to score Tyler Saladino and Jon Gilmore and tying the game at 2-2.
Justin Greene would singlehandedly manufacture the winning run in the 7th , walking to lead off the inning, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch by reliever Casey Weathers (1-1, 4.66) and scoring on a wild pitch one out later. With two outs, Saladino singled, stole second and scored on a single by Drew Garcia, giving the Barons a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish. The hit by Garcia extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The steals were the 10th of the season for both Greene and Saladino who are tied for the league lead in thefts.
Matt Wickswat performed admirably in his first start of the season allowing one run on four hits in 4.1 innings. Wickswat was forced into a spot start when Jose Quintana was scratched earlier in the day. The lone run came in the fifth as Wickswat allowed a leadoff walk to the nine hole hitter Jim Adduci, who was then sacrificed to second on a bunt and scored on an RBI single by Elliot Soto.
Brandon Kloess relieved Wickswat and allowed a sacrifice fly to Adduci in the sixth but the Smokies were held scoreless the rest of the way.
The win went to Kloess (2-2, 3.24) who allowed a run on two hits in 3.1 innings while striking out four. Dan Remenowski recorded the final four outs to pick up his first save of the year.
With the win, the Barons improved to 17-14 on the year while the Smokies fell to 13-18. The Barons will look to make it two-straight over the Smokies tomorrow night. Nestor Molina (3-1, 3.72) will take the hill against Nick Struck (3-2, 3.58). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
