Barons Power Play Ends Rivermen Winning Streak

The Oklahoma City Barons ended Peoria's five game win streak on Thursday night, 7-2, at Carver Arena with four power-play goals and a perfect penalty kill. The Rivermen trailed by one entering the final frame, but four unanswered goals pushed the Barons to the lopsided win. The five-goal differential and the seven goals against were both season highs against the Rivermen.

The Barons scored on their first shot for the second straight game against the Rivermen. Greg Stuart buried a deflection past Jake Allen at 7:39 for his fourth of the year. Assists were given to Ben Ondrus and Richard Petiot. Graham Mink had the answer for Peoria though slamming in a loose puck in the crease for his 11th of the year at 12:02. T.J. Hensick's shot was stuck in the pads of Martin Gerber until Nick Drazenovic pried it free.

With Ian Cole and Dave Spina in the box, the Barons were able to pick up a pair of power-play goals from Alexandre Giroux and Bryan Helmer. Giroux blasted his first of two on the night on the two-man advantage, and Helmer capitalized on the remaining power play 30 seconds later.

Stefan Della Rovere capped off the high-scoring first period with his sixth of the year at 18:20. Anthony Nigro and Tyler Shattock worked the puck to the left circle for Della Rovere who stopped and backhanded in his sixth of the season.

The Barons erupted after a scoreless second with four unanswered goals in the third. Giroux got his second of the game, also on the power play at 5:07. Moran picked up his third assist of the night on the goal. Just a mere 1:40 seconds later at the conclusion of another Rivermen penalty, Teemu Hartikainen netted his 12th of the year from Petiot and Alex Plante.

At 15:15 Helmer converted on the power play for the second time en route to an American Hockey League record. The goal gave Helmer 519 career points, which is the most all-time amongst AHL defenseman. Philippe Cornet put in his second of the year late in the third to wrap up the scoring.

The Rivermen were outshot 33-27 in the contest and also went 0-for-5 on the power play. It was the first since Oct. 22 that Peoria was unable to convert on the power play given a minimum of five opportunities.

Peoria and Oklahoma City will play for the fourth time this week on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as the Rivermen continue their three-game homestand.
