Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second time in three nights, the Biscuits (30-22) squandered a two-run lead in the final two innings and lost to the Birmingham Barons (21-31), 5-2, on Thursday night at Regions Field.
Both starters-Sam McWilliams for the Biscuits and Kyle Kubat for the Barons-pitched superbly, with the former going seven shutout innings and fanning seven, and Kubat going 7.2 and allowing just two runs.
After six innings without a score, the Biscuits would finally break through against Kubat with a Tristan Gray RBI-groundout in the seventh that made it 1-0 Montgomery. An inning later, Jermaine Palacios put a bunt down, but Kubat threw it away, the error scoring the Biscuits' second run of the contest.
With the Biscuits in front 2-0, manager Morgan Ensberg brought on closer Curtis Taylor in the bottom of the eighth, and the right-hander retired the first batter he faced in Laz Rivera, who flew out to deep center. Nate Nolan then doubled, and Mitch Roman knocked in the catcher with an RBI-single to make it a 2-1 game.
Luis Robert was up next, and the White Sox number two prospect sent a towering fly ball to shallow left. Biscuits shortstop Lucius Fox lost the ball in the lights, however, and dropped it, allowing Roman to move to third and Robert to second on the E6.
Ensberg then removed Taylor for Phoenix Sanders, who got Luis Basabe to flyout to deep right. Sanders then walked Luis Gonzalez to load the bases for Gavin Sheets, who was just 1-for-27 against the Biscuits entering the at-bat. But the first baseman didn't miss, hammering a go-ahead grand slam over the right field wall to make it 5-2 Barons. The Biscuits then went three and out in the top of the ninth against Alec Hansen.
The Biscuits loss coupled with the Jackson Generals win over the Chattanooga Lookouts means that Montgomery and Jackson are now tied for first place in the First Half North Division with 18 games to play.
The Biscuits will try to rebound on Friday when an opener and Kenny Rosenberg (3-1) take on Blake Battenfield (1-1) at 7:05 PM CT.
The Biscuits will be back at Riverwalk Stadium to open up a five-game series with the Tennessee Smokies on Sunday, June 2 when there will be a Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Jersey Giveaway. The series also includes Alabama Agriculture Night on Tuesday, June 4; A Trucker Hat Giveaway presented by U.S. Air Force on Wednesday, June 5; and 80's Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by Gipson's Tire Pros on Thursday, June 6.
