Oklahoma City Barons News Release
Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma City Barons program called "Barons Buddies" begins with its first event this Wednesday at the Cox Convention Center. The event will take place in the Exhibit Halls 1 & A on the west side of the Cox Convention Center starting from 6 "" 8 p.m.
The Barons Buddies program allows a family involved with Special Olympics Oklahoma to be "adopted" by a player on the Barons roster. The team will host three events during the season that will bring all the families together for a fun night with their adopted player. In addition to participating in the three events, the families will be invited to the Barons home game February 3 against the Charlotte Checkers.
"The Barons Buddies program was designed to improve the relationship between the team and select families from Special Olympics Oklahoma," said Prodigal CEO Bob Funk Jr. "Special Olympics Oklahoma is one of our primary community initiatives for our team. This program is unique because it allows the entire team to be involved, but gives the families and individual team members an opportunity to bond with their family."
"Special Olympics Oklahoma is honored to be part of the new Barons Buddies program," said Development Director Derek Cain. "The Barons Buddies program is a great example of how the Barons are truly wanting to make a difference in the life's of individuals with intellectual disabilities."
The first of the three nights is this Wednesday. The families will meet the players at the Cox Convention Center for a night of games. The second night in January will be a bowling outing and the third night will be an off- site pizza party near the end of the Barons regular season.
The Barons earn a much-deserved break and will not practice until Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Cox Convention Center. Players and coaches will be available for interviews following practice. Head Coach Todd Nelson and his squad return to game action at home this Friday against the San Antonio Rampage. Faceoff is 7 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center. Tickets start at $10 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Cox Convention Center box office.
