Lancaster Stormers News Release
Aaron Herr blasted a two-run homer in the top of the first and got two other rallies started as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Long Island Ducks, 5-3, Friday evening in front of 6,603 at Suffolk County Sports Park.
Herr took Joselo Diaz (4-2) out of the yard to left center in the first inning two outs after Reggie Taylor had bounced a single through the right side.
The Lancaster offense did not wake up again until the sixth.
Meanwhile, Long Island was able to bounce back against Josh Hall (4-2). Dustan Mohr led off the fourth inning with a long blast to left center. Michael Woods lunged for the ball against the boards and dazed himself with Mohr reaching third on a triple. He scored on a grounder to second by Matt Esquivel.
Billy Kovatch started the home fifth with a single to left center. Woods slipped and fell digging the ball out of the alley, allowing Kovatch to take second. Matt Cavagnaro struck out attempting to bunt, but Erick Monzon, who is 16-for-25 against Lancaster this season, doubled over Taylor's head in left to knock home the tying run. Ray Navarrete grounded out with Monzon taking third, and John Rodriguez plugged the alley in right center for an RBI double that gave Long Island a brief lead.
Herr led the comeback charge, ripping a one-out single to left in the top of the sixth. Diaz proceeded to walk the next two batters to load the bases. Woods lifted a fly to right, deep enough to score Herr for a 3-3 tie. Jed Morris came through with lined single to right, bringing Nelson across with a go-ahead run. Joe Gaetti was hit by a pitch before Ivan Maldonado came on to strike out Taylor to end the inning.
Maldonado gave Lancaster their fifth run in the seventh with two-out walks to Herr and Nelson, a balk and a wild pitch.
Hall departed after a two-out double to left center by Monzon in the seventh. He allowed seven hits and three runs while walking one and striking out eight. Tim McNab took over and faced the minimum of seven batters over the final 2 1/3 innings to record his first save.
The Barnstormers and Ducks get a short time to digest the series opener. They will play a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. Nick Maness (0-3) will square off against Randy Leek (8-1) in the opener while the nightcap will pit Ben Fritz (0-3) against Sidney Ponson (3-5). Games are scheduled for 1:05 and 7:05.
Lancaster will return home on Friday to face the York Revolution.
