Newark Bears News Release
(Newark, N.J.) - Raul Padron hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run first inning and former MLB catcher Ben Davis continued his transformation into a pitcher by pitching 5 2/3 innings to gain the victory, leading the Camden Riversharks to a 6-4 victory over the Newark Bears Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Riversharks reached Bears starter Bubba O'Donnell (3-2) for five runs in the opening frame. Brian Burgamy, who had two hits, drove in Kyle Haines for the game's first run, then Padron lined a drive over the right field wall with the bases loaded to push the lead to 5-0.
Davis, the No. 2 pick overall in the 1995 MLB draft who played eight seasons in the majors with San Diego, Seattle and the Chicago White Sox, became a pitcher in 2007. He improved to 2-0 with his second straight strong start and victory, allowing two runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. The Riversharks pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Rich Robnett.
The Bears cut the lead to 6-2 in the home sixth when Shawn Williams doubled and scored on a single by James Cooper and Cooper then scored on a single by Scott Spiezio. That was all Davis would see for the evening and he was replaced by Eddy Camacho, who shut the door on that Bears' rally. Tracy Thorpe, a former Bear, retired the last five batters to earn his first save of the season. The Bears reached Camacho for two runs in the home eighth, when Cooper reached on an error and scored on a triple by Kennard Jones, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Edgardo Alfonzo.
Cooper was the lone Bear to record a multi-hit game with a single and double in four at-bats. Former NJIT hurler Matt Melody had his best outing in relief for the Bears, pitching three hitless innings, striking out a career-best five in the process.
The Bears and Riversharks continue the series with a double-header on Saturday. Game one is a makeup of the April 25 rainout. The teams will play a pair of seven-inning games, with game two beginning 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 4:05 p.m. Fans can take advantage of our Family Four Pack.
