Lancaster uses strong starting pitching, edge Ducks

(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Long Island Ducks 5-3 on Friday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,603 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

In the top of the first, Lancaster took an early two-run advantage on a two-run homer off the bat of Aaron Herr. Long Island cut the deficit in half with a single run off Stormers' starter Josh Hall in the home fourth. Matt Esquivel's RBI groundout plated Dustan Mohr, who led off the inning with a triple.

The Ducks took their first lead of the game after putting up a two-spot in the fifth inning. RBI doubles by Erick Monzon and John Rodriguez helped give Long Island a 3-2 advantage.

Lancaster quickly regained the lead, scoring two more runs in the visitor's sixth off Ducks' starter Joselo Diaz. Michael Woods' RBI sacrifice fly tied the game at three, and Jed Morris' RBI single gave the Stormers a 4-3 lead. Two walks, a balk, and a wild pitch against Ducks' reliever Ivan Maldonado extended Lancaster's lead to 5-3.

Hall (4-2) earned the win, allowing seven hits and three runs in six and two-thirds innings, with eight strikeouts. Diaz (4-2) was saddled with the loss, yielding five hits and four runs over his five and two-thirds innings of work. Tim McNab picked up his first save of the season, with two and one-third innings of scoreless relief.

The Ducks and Barnstormers continue their four-game set on Saturday with a day/night doubleheader. Game time for game one is set for 1:05 p.m. with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 12:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Autograph Books, courtesy of Newsday. Fans will be invited onto the field for a pre-game autograph session with the 2010 Long Island Ducks as well as following the game for Kids Run the Bases, courtesy of Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Randy Leek gets the start for Long Island against Lancaster's Nick Maness. Game time for the nightcap is set for 7:05 p.m. with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 6:05 p.m. on Italian Heritage Night. The 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Soccer Balls, presented by Sons of Italy. Sidney Ponson toes the rubber for the Flock against Barnstormers' starter Ben Fritz.
