Lancaster Stormers News Release

It all came together for Cesar Carrillo on Wednesday night.

The former first round pick of the San Diego Padres checked the Somerset Patriots on four singles over eight innings for a 9-1 win in the finale of a two-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

With the win, the Barnstormers stayed within three games of York in the Freedom Division's second half.

Carrillo (4-10) walked four and struck out six in his longest outing of the season.

The Barnstormers jumped on Derell McCall (4-7) for a pair of runs in the first inning. With one out, Wayne Lydon walked, and Tommy Everidge singled to left center. Lydon would steal third and score on a ground single through the right side by Fernando Seguignol. Travis Metcalf grounded a single into left to load the bases. Aaron Herr picked up a walk to force home Everidge for the 2-0 lead.

After that McCall slammed the door and kept it barred for a long while, retiring 15 Lancaster hitters in a row, putting pressure on Carrillo.

Carrillo's night did not get off to a particularly fortunate start, either. Iggy Suarez threw away a grounder by Elliott Ayala, and Norris Hopper beat out a bouncer near the second base bag to put runners at the corners with nobody out in the first inning. Fernando Cortez hit another chopper near second, which was flagged by Gilberto Mejia and turned into a quick double play as a run scored.

In the second, the former Miami Hurricane star got himself in trouble, walking Matt Hagen and Josh Pressley to open the frame. Justin Huber lined to right for the first out. Somerset then started its runners, but the Patriots were outfoxed by catcher Matt Tupman who threw for the trailing runner, cutting down Pressley. John Pachot grounded to third to end the inning, and Carrillo would go on to retire 15 of 16 batters.

Lancaster broke out of McCall's spell quickly in the sixth. Seguignol ripped his second hit of the night into right, and Metcalf followed with a two-run homer to left for a 4-1 edge.

Interim manager Lance Burkhart stuck with Carrillo in the seventh after Hagen lined a single to center, and Pressley walked. The move worked - Huber grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. A third double play, created by Pachot running on a swinging third strike by Ayala, stemmed any trouble in the eighth, and the Barnstormers iced the game with three runs in the ninth.

The Barnstormers head home to face the Road Warriors on Thursday evening. Lancaster will send Yunior Novoa (4-3) to the mound against fellow lefty Jason Norderum. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.

NOTES: The 9-1 win was Lancaster's largest margin of victory on the season...The Barnstormers won seven of nine at Somerset for the season and 12 of 18 against the Patriots overall...Seguignol has batted safely in all six games since his return from the inactive list (9-23, .391)...Lydon has scored 25 runs in his last 16 starts...Tupman has batted safely in his last 10 games that have gone the full nine innings (streak was broken when he went 0-for-2 in last Friday's five-inning game at Southern Maryland).
