Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 24, 2011) -The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-4 on Wednesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,053 at Bethpage Ballpark.
Southern Maryland got on the board early with Casey Benjamin's solo homer in the second and Brian Barton's solo blast in the fourth off Ducks' starter Joselo Diaz to take a 2-0 lead. Long Island tied it at two apiece in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by J.R. House and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Matt Esquivel off Blue Crabs' starter Edward Rodriguez.
The `Crabs took back the lead on Barton's RBI groundout and Benjamin's run-scoring single in the fifth to go ahead 4-2. A run-scoring infield single by Lew Ford in the fifth cut the deficit to one, and after another Blue Crabs run crossed home in the sixth, a sac fly by Ford in the seventh made it a one-run ballgame again.
However, Barton blasted a two-run homer to left in the ninth off Ehren Wassermann to put the game away. Rodriguez (7-4) got the win, tossing six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four. Diaz (6-8) took the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits despite striking out seven in five innings. Jim Ed Warden earned his 26th save with a scoreless ninth.
House paced Long Island with three hits while Ford's two RBI led the way.
