Lancaster Stormers News Release

Matt Wright checked Somerset on one run and six hits over 6 2/3 innings, as the right-hander downed the Patriots, 5-3, in the finale of a three-game series Thursday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster's lead grew to 1 1/2 games over York in the Freedom Division.

Wright (4-8) yielded six hits and three walks while striking out seven, tying his season high. The Waco native had a runner reach scoring position in every inning outside of the first, but Somerset only put a run on the board on a fifth inning sacrifice fly by Fernando Cortez.

Meanwhile, the Barnstormers built an early 4-0 lead off Derell McCall (4-6). Tommy Everidge drilled a two-out double into the left field corner in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. Matt Watson followed with a single into right, and Everidge beat Norris Hopper's throw to the plate. Watson was gunned down trying to advance to second.

Lancaster struck for three more in the fourth inning. Everidge singled into center, and Watson walked. Aaron Herr's single into center delivered Everidge for a 2-0 edge. Brandon Jones loaded the bases with a base hit through the hole on the right side, bringing Travis Metcalf to the plate. The most recent arrival on the club slammed a two-run double over Elliott Ayala's head in left as Lancaster took the four-run lead. From there, McCall was able to freeze runners at second and third, keeping Somerset in the game.

Wright left with a 4-1 lead after walking Jeff Nettles two outs into the seventh. Ross Peeples allowed a single to Josh Pressley, but Evan Englebrook retired Matt Hagen on a foul popup to Metcalf at first to get out of trouble.

The usually reliable back end combination of Jon Huber and Jonah Bayliss had a rocky evening. Huber walked Joe Burke, who stole second, and Norris Hopper followed with a single to pull Somerset within two. After the Barnstormers scored an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, Bayliss walked Cortez on a full count pitch to start the night. Nettles drilled a single into left. The Lancaster crowd of 5,193 then had to hold its breath as Pressley crushed a double off the top of the center field wall.

With the tying run in scoring position and nobody out, Bayliss was able to settle things down. Hagen fouled out to Metcalf for the second straight at bat. Burke flied to right for out number two. Then, the Barnstormers went against the book by walking the red hot Hopper intentionally. With the bases loaded, John Pachot flied to left to end the game as Bayliss picked up his 14th save in as many tries.

Long Island comes to Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday evening to open a three-game series. The Barnstormers will send right-hander Cesar Carrillo (3-9) to the mound to match up against right-hander Mark Diapoules (5-1) in the 7:00 contest. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
