Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn.) - Bluefish starter, Raymar Diaz, led the Bridgeport Bluefish (17-10, 49-41) in snapping a three-game losing streak by taking down the Road Warriors (7-21, 29-62) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Bridgeport won by a score of 10-3 on Friday night.
Diaz (6-0) become the third pitcher in Bluefish history to win his first six decisions of the year as a Bridgeport starter. The other two were Steve Renko (1999) and Gavin Osteen (2000). Diaz also won his sixth straight start; Friday's winner needs a victory in his next start to tie franchise record set by Alan Mahaffey (2002). The righthander tossed eight innings and allowed two earned runs. Matt Smith pitched the final frame for the winning team.
Bridgeport jumped out to the early lead by sending nine batters to the plate. In the first inning, Adam Greenberg sent a solo shot to right. His ninth of the season is the most he has hit in a professional year. With one out, Steve Moss walked. After a second out had been recorded, Luis Lopez singled and Brock Peterson walked to load the bases. Prentice Redman hit a bases clearing double to leftcenter to get the Bluefish up by four. Luis Rodriguez followed the at-bat with a single to score the final run of the frame.
The Bluefish offense added five more runs in the fourth. The big shot was a grand slam by Wes Bankston to left. His 20th homer of the season helped bring the home team a ten-run advantage.
Alberto Cruz hit a two-run shot in the sixth and the Road Warriors pushed one more run across in the ninth; but the road squad was unable to complete the comeback.
Kelvin Villa (4-7) suffered the loss as the lefthander surrendered ten runs (five earned) in three-and-two-thirds frames. Kyle Asleton and Roberto Giron combined for four-and-a-third shutout innings the rest of the way.
After being held hitless, Andres Perez' hitting streak ended at 18 consecutive games.
The Bluefish continue a series in Bridgeport against the Road Warriors on Saturday. First pitch at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The gates open one hour before first pitch.
