Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs survived a late rally by Camden to defeat the Riversharks 7-6 on Friday evening in front of 4,827 fans at Regency

Furniture Stadium.

Southern Maryland struck first by scoring two runs in the first. With the bases loaded and no one out, third baseman Travis Garcia reached on a fielding error by

Riversharks first baseman Brian Burgamy to make the score 1-0. First baseman Casey Benjamin followed that by reaching on a fielder's choice, which scored second

baseman Brandon Pinckney from third and gave Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead.

Camden bounced right back in the second as they got two runs on RBI singles from Burgamy and catcher Toby Hall to tie the game.

The Blue Crabs retook the lead in the third as Garcia led off with a triple then came in to score on a groundout by Benjamin to give Southern Maryland a 3-2 lead. The

Blue Crabs extended it to a two-run lead in the fourth as a throwing error by Camden third baseman Lloyd Turner allowed centerfielder Adam Godwin to score from

second and give Southern Maryland a 4-2 advantage.

Southern Maryland busted the game open by scoring three more runs in the sixth catcher Christian Lopez (8) led off the inning with a solo homer, which provided

Lopez with his first RBI since July 20th. The Blue Crabs then got an RBI double from Pinckney and a RBI single from Benjamin to increase the lead to 7-2.

Camden would not lay down however. The Riversharks got one in the seventh on an RBI single from third baseman Lloyd Turner, which was followed by a three-run

homer from Hall (2) in the eighth to cut the Blue Crabs' lead to 7-6.

The Riversharks then put runners at first and third with two out in the eighth before Southern Maryland reliever Steve Palazzolo struck out leftfielder Noah Hall

looking to get the Blue Crabs out of the inning.

From there, closer Jim Ed Warden came in the game for Southern Maryland and ended the game with a scoreless ninth. It was Warden's league-leading 22nd save of

the season in 25 opportunities.

The Blue Crabs got a three hit performance from right fielder Adam Godwin who scored three times and stole two bases. Pinckney and Garcia each had two hits with

Pinckney scoring twice and driving in a run. Benjamin ended the evening with three RBI for the Blue Crabs.

Camden pounded out 14 hits but also surrendered four errors for the evening. The Riversharks were led by Toby Hall who went 2-4 with a homer and four RBI. In

addition, Turner, right fielder Ruddy Yan, shortstop Danny Richar, and centerfielder Jonel Pacheco each had two hits to pace Camden. Yan also had a stolen base and

a run scored, while Richar doubled and scored a run as well.

Starter Michael Schlact (6-3) got the win for the Blue Crabs as he allowed only two runs on eight hits while walking none in six innings of work. The loss went to

Camden starter Eddy Camacho (5-4) who gave up seven runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. He also walked five and struck out three.

The Blue Crabs take on the Riversharks in game two of their three-game series on Saturday at 6:35. Southern Maryland will trot out right-hander Nick Green (6-5,

4.31 ERA) against southpaw Carlos Vasquez (8-3, 3.98 ERA) of the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
