Barnstormers Nipped By Singles Barrage

July 1, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Thirteen of the first 18 balls hit by the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday evening fell in for base hits, including 11 singles.

The Ducks used those hits to build a 7-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers for their 16th consecutive win at Bethpage Ballpark.

For the Barnstormers, it was their eighth loss in the last nine games. Meanwhile, Long Island stayed alive in the wild first half race in the Liberty Division, though Somerset's magic number dropped to one.

Nate Reed (1-5) slipped out of the first inning with the bases loaded after striking out Cody Puckett for his third punchout of the inning. He was not as fortunate in the second.

Prentice Redman started the inning with a solid single to center and advanced to second on Dan Lyons' trickler hit up the third base line. Bryan Sabatella hit a slow bounder to second for a force out, but Reegie Corona slammed a ground rule double to left center for a 1-0 Ducks lead. Lew Ford cleaned up the remaining baserunners with a single out of shortstop Anderson Feliz' reach for a 3-0 advantage.

The Barnstormers recovered in the fourth with the help of a wild spell from Billy Buckner (5-1). He walked both Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Wilson Batista then hit Luke Hughes with a pitch to load the bases. Brandon Jones produced one run with a single to left, and a second scored when Juan Apodaca grounded into a double play. Feliz tied the game with a base hit lined to center, and Jerry Owens walked before Buckner fanned Yusuke Kajimoto to end the inning.

Long Island picked up five singles to score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, including an infield hit up the third base line by Corona. Reed got Randy Ruiz to foul out to first, but Jon Griffin nailed a two-run single into center, chasing the left-hander, who got seven of his 11 outs on strikes. Puckett greeted Kyle Simon with a bloop hit to right to extend the lead to 6-3.

Cavazos-Galvez cleared the left field wall with a towering home run one out into the fifth inning, but the Barnstormers failed to mount any offense against the Long Island bullpen until Feliz and Owens opened the ninth with singles. Ryan Kussmaul then retired three straight for his 20th save.

The two clubs wrap up the series on Thursday evening. Lancaster will send All-Star Shunsuke Watanabe (4-2) to the mound on three days rest. He will square off against Long Island lefty Andrew Barbosa (4-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app at 6:15.

NOTES: Owens had two singles and a walk...He has reached base in 13 straight...Chad Beck struck out three in the eighth...He has 18 K's in his last nine innings...Cavazos-Galvez has hit four of his eight homers at Bethpage Ballpark.
