Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed RHP Ryan Braun to a contract, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Braun, 30, signed with the Kansas City Royals in 2003 and rose quickly through their organization. The native of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada had some outstanding years in the minors, including 2006 when he saved 13 games and posted a combined 2.19 ERA between Class AA Wichita and Class AAA Omaha. That season earned Braun his first big league promotion, and he made his debut on September 2. He also opened the 2007 season with Kansas City and eventually split time between the big leagues and Class AAA Omaha.
Overall, Braun has appeared in 35 Major League games with a 2-1 record and 6.66 ERA.
After missing the 2008 season, Braun was picked up by the Chicago White Sox for the 2009 campaign but appeared in only nine games in the low minors. Last year, the White Sox moved him to Class AAA Charlotte where he appeared in 52 games, going 1-3 with 18 saves and a 2.20 ERA.
In his career, Braun is 8-17 with 66 saves and a 2.36 ERA in the minors. He has struck out 282 batters in 255 innings of work.
"(Ryan) is a quality bullpen guy," said manager Butch Hobson. "He has a live fastball and good breaking stuff and is another guy we can use in the late innings."
To make room on the roster, the Barnstormers released infielder Tanner Townsend. Townsend had appeared in two games for the Barnstormers but did not bat. He was a pinch runner and took over defensively at shortstop in his two games. Pitcher John Koronka was placed on the inactive list.
The division-leading Barnstormers face Bridgeport in a three-game series this weekend and will head to York on Wednesday before returning home to host the Revolution on Thursday, May 26. Game time for this special Salute to Veterans night is 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Faulkner Chevrolet box office or by visiting www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are in their seventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
