
Timely Lancaster Offense Leads to Bluefish Loss

(Bridgeport, CT - May 20, 2011) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-9) suffered a 7-3 setback on Friday Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Lancaster Barnstormers (12-4). Bridgeport has lost all four meetings this season against Lancaster.
Matt Smith (0-1) suffered the loss for Bridgeport as he served six-and-a-third innings while allowing five runs, nine hits and four walks. Antonio Alfonseca tossed one-and-two-thirds frames of scoreless baseball. Chris Rivera,however, did not throw shutout ball in an inning of work. The righthander surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk.
Ross Peeples (1-1) threw five innings of two-run baseball to pick up the victory for Lancaster. Bridgeport had eight batters reach base against the southpaw. The bullpen was strong as Bridgeport produced one run in the final four innings.
Lancaster got on the scoreboard in the third inning by scoring twice. A two-out walk led to a two-run blast by Tommy Everidge. His sixth homer of the season gave the road team a 2-0 advantage.
The Bluefish responded with a one out solo shot in the second from Luis Rodriguez. The drive to leftcenter was his first of 2011 to cut the deficit to one.
A run was scored by Lancaster in the top of the fourth. Terry Tiffee singled with one out. After a second out had been recorded, Alvin Colina singled and Adam Godwin doubled to push Tiffee to the plate and give Lancaster a 3-1 lead.
With two batters out in the bottom of the fourth, Wes Bankston smacked his second home run in as many games. The shot left pulled the Bluefish to with a run.
Lancaster added two more runs in the seventh. With one batter out, Ben Copeland singled and Tommy Everidge walked to set up runners at first and second. Fernando Seguignol smacked an RBI double to right to increase the lead to two. Aaron Herr singled home Everidge to give the Barnstormers a 5-2 advantage.
Bridgeport scored one more run in the game. The rally came in the seventh. A one out single by Mercedes and a balk by reliever, Tim McNab, pushed Mercedes to second. Steve Moss doubled to push Mercedes home and cut the deficit to 5-3.
Barnstormer bats were too much as the team put the game out of reach with two runners touching home plate in the ninth. Copeland doubled and Everidge walked. With runners at first and second, Seguignol sent a fly ball to deep left. On the play, Copeland tagged and advanced to third. Aaron Herr followed with grounder to second; but the ball went through the legs of Mercedes at second; Copeland scored on the error. A single by Tiffee brought in the final run of the contest.
Steve Moss extended his hitting streak to six games with the double in the seventh inning while Lancaster snapped Adam Greenberg's eleven game on-base stretch.
Bridgeport continues a three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Saturday, May 21. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. The gates open one hour prior to first pitch.
