Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs completed a sweep of the Long Island Ducks on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in a 7-4 win that puts them 1.5 games in front of Long Island for first place in the Liberty Division.
Southern Maryland got the scoring started on a ground-rule, RBI double from designated hitter Jose Herrera and an RBI single from third baseman Travis Garcia to take a 2-0 lead. Long Island bounced back in the second on a RBI double from right fielder Matt Esquivel, after left fielder John Rodriguez led off with a triple.
The Blue Crabs would extend their lead to three as an RBI single from first baseman Ryan Mulhern and a sac flyby right fielder Ben Harrison put the Blue Crabs up 4-1 in the fourth inning. The RBI single from Mulhern gave the Blue Crabs first baseman 14 RBI in the last four games.
Shortstop Javier Colina (2) pulled the Ducks back to within one as he hit his second homer in as many nights to make the score 4-3 in the fifth. Long Island would then tie the game in the sixth on a solo homer by Esquivel (1) to knot things up at four apiece.
But Southern Maryland would score the last three runs of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, centerfielder Jeremy Owens provided the go ahead run with a bases-loaded RBI single to score Herrera from third. Second baseman Brandon Pinckney followed with an infield single that scored Mulhern and gave the Blue Crabs a 6-4 advantage.
The Blue Crabs would cap the scoring in the seventh as Garcia belted his league-leading seventh homer of the year to give Southern Maryland a 7-4 advantage that they would not relinquish.
Garcia led the Blue Crabs offense by going 3-4 with a homer, two singles, two RBI and two runs scored. Colina went 3-5 for the Ducks with a homer, two singles, and two RBI. Rodriguez and Esquivel chipped in with two hits as well with Esquivel also driving in two runs.
Getting the win in relief for Southern Maryland was Bryan Dumesnil (1-1) who allowed a run in one inning of work after starter Nick Green allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out three in five innings of work. Releivers Eduardo Morlan, Steve Palazzolo, and Jim Ed Warden combined to allow only one hit over the final three innings while striking out four. For Warden, he picked up his seventh save in as many opportunities.
Starter Heath Phillips (2-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven hits, four runs, three walks, and three strikeouts.
The Blue Crabs go back on the road to face the Somerset Patriots in the first game of a three game series tomorrow at 7:05`1q of their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Nick Green (2-1, 7.91 ERA) will go for Southern Maryland against lefty Heath Phillips (1-1, 4.96 ERA) of Long Island.
