Lancaster Stormers News Release
Mickey Jannis outdueled Bryan Morgado and the Lancaster bullpen as the Long Island Ducks captured the series opener, 1-0, Monday evening at Bethpage Ballpark.
The game had only eight hits while pitchers combined to strike out 24 opposing hitters on the evening.
Jannis (6-2) yielded three singles and three walks over 8 1/3 innings and became the first opposing pitcher since 2012 to strike out more than 10 Barnstormers in a game, fanning 11.
He retired the first 12 batters he faced, eight on strikes, before Mike McDade singled to open the fifth inning. Jannis hit Luke Hughes with a pitch and walked Jake Luce to load the bases. Lancaster came close to forcing home a run as Anderson Feliz jumped ahead, 3-0, but Jannis got three consecutive strikes, the final one looking on the outside corner to quell the threat.
Lancaster had another opportunity in the ninth. With one out, McDade walked, and Wilson Batista singled pinch runner Brandon Jones to third. Ryan Kussmaul came in and got Hughes to pop out and Juan Apodaca to strike out swinging, putting an end to the night.
Bryan Morgado (0-3) was stellar in his first true start since 2011. The Ducks nicked him for an unearned run in the first. Delta Cleary, Jr., the only player in either lineup to collect two hits, singled to center with one out. He broke for second on Morgado's first move to first. McDade's throw toward second sailed past Yusuke Kajimoto into left field, and Cleary sprinted for third. Lew Ford grounded to third. Initially, Cleary held, but broke for the plate as soon as Hughes fired across the diamond. He beat McDade's throw home for the game's only run.
Morgado worked five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six. He retired the final 10 Ducks he faced, none hitting the ball out of the infield.
The series continues on Tuesday evening. Lancaster will send right-hander Bryan Woodall (1-4) to the hill against right-hander John Brownell (6-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
