YORK, Pa. - The Sugar Land Skeeters saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Monday as they dropped their eighth-straight road game, falling in a pitchers dual with York, 1-0. The Skeeters fall to 33-32 on the season following the loss.
Skeeter's starter, Roy Merritt, was saddled with the hard-luck loss, throwing all eight innings. The southpaw gave up four hits, including the decisive solo shot in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out a season-high seven batters in the setback, moving to 2-2 on the year.
Both starting pitchers were on their A-game through the first five innings, allowing a combined four baserunners through the first five frames. Sugar Land's Merritt scattered a single to left and a hit-batsmen while striking out five through the first half of the game while York's Logan Morrison gave up a pair of singles while striking out three.
The Skeeters put consecutive hits together in the top of the sixth. Denny Almonte singled with one out, but was erased when caught stealing second base. Willy Taveras and Delwyn Young stacked up back-to-back singles with Taveras advancing to third. Travis Scott ended the scoring opportunity with a popup to first, keeping the game scoreless.
Sugar Land threatened again in the top of the seventh. Kevin Russo singled into right field to get the inning started before Johan Limonta drew a walk. Chris Wallace lifted a fly ball to deep centerfield, allowing Russo and Limonta to tag and advance into scoring position. Patrick Palmeiro and Amadeo Zazueta were unable to drive the runners in, with an infield popup and groundout ending the threat.
After escaping a pair of scoring opportunities by the Skeeters, York pushed across the game's first-run in the bottom of the seventh. Yeicok Calderon hit Merrit's 0-1 offering over the wall to break the scoring seal and stake the Revolution to a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Russo opened the top of the ninth with a single into left off Josh Judy, but a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts concluded the contest.
