Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT - June 29, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (24-39) scored six unanswered runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning en route to a dramatic 7-6 come from behind victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (36-27) in the opening game of a five game series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Monday night. The victory matched the biggest comeback of the season for Bridgeport, which last took place also at home on May 7th against the Long Island Ducks when the 'Fish were winners by the same 7-6 score in 14 innings. It was also Bridgeport's eighth come from behind win in 2015.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan registered a no-decision, tossing six innings, allowing six runs (five earned runs) on nine hits, walking three, and striking out four. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres also did not factor in the decision, going six and one-third innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Bridgeport manager Ricky Van Asselberg was ejected for the second time this season in the top of the third inning, and his players responded in defense of the skipper and staged the big rally in the bottom half of the seventh inning that proved to be the difference. Trailing 6-1, Andres Rodriguez got things started with a leadoff walk off Burres. Rodriguez then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Burns followed with an infield single, and the 'Fish had the first two on. Matt Wessinger belted a two-run double that split the outfielders in left center, scoring Rodriguez and Burns to cut the Blue Crabs lead to 6-3. James Simmons struck out and that was the last batter Burres would face. On came right-hander Cody Eppley, who had not allowed a run since joining Southern Maryland. Josh Prince singled to put runners at the corners. Welington Dotel's single brought home Wessinger to cut the deficit to 6-4. John Alonso completed the comeback with a three-run bomb over the second wall in left field, and in the blink of an eye the Bluefish had a 7-6 lead. Eppley (1-1) suffered the loss, tossing two-thirds of an inning, surrendering three runs on three hits, giving up one home run and not striking out or walking a batter. Bridgeport batted around in the inning, scoring six runs on five hits.

The Bluefish bullpen did the rest, as Robert Carson (1-0) earned his first victory as a member of the 'Fish, retiring all three batters he faced, striking out one. The left-hander has mowed down nine consecutive batters he has appeared against over a stretch of three relief outings, punching out five. Erik Draxton pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one, and Patrick Mincey pitched a perfect ninth inning to complete the miraculous comeback for his team leading eighth save. Dotel led the ten hit attack for Bridgeport with three base knocks.

The Bluefish continue their series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, June 30th on Finance and Banking Night. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a 2015 All-Star Game Logo Collector's Pin. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
